After a long, agonising 13 years of development filled with spin offs and remasters, Kingdom Hearts III has finally arrived and stormed to the top of the UK charts. The nice thing for Square Enix is that the game seems to have been worth the wait, both for fans of the series and in terms of sales. Obviously there weren’t digital downloads when Kingdom Hearts II released on PlayStation 2 – and the UK charts still don’t feature digital sales – so Kingdom Hearts III selling more than double at retail will only be a bigger success when taking that into account.
It drops Resident Evil 2 down to second spot, with sales slipping 67%, while a lot of familiar games fill out the rest of the top 10. The only other new entry is Dragons: Dawn of New Rider to tie in with the movie, but this could only muster 37th.
