It must be another weekday with a letter D in it, because THQ Nordic have gone out and bought another dev studio. This time they’ve picked up Milan-based motorbike racing specialists Milestone s.r.l., with the studio and all their intellectual property joining THQ’s ballooning portfolio.
Milestone have been churning out game after game after game in the last few years, as they made the jump from an in-house engine to Unreal Engine 4. MotoGP is their main franchise, alongside similarly licensed MXGP and Supercross dirt bike racers, while Ride has been Milestone’s biggest self-owned IP. All of these are set to continue as before, just with THQ publishing.
Well, technically Milestone seem to be joining the Koch Media side of the company, the German publisher and its Deep Silver label having been snapped up by the Austrian back in February 2018. That was just a part of THQ’s spending spree which since this time last year has included buying up the TimeSplitters & Second Sight IPs, the Kingdoms of Amalur IP, and the Alone in the Dark series, acquiring Coffee Stain and Bugbear, Piranha Bites and Kingdom Come developer Warhorse Studios, and nabbing Carmageddon. In total there were a ridiculous 48 games in development at THQ in May, but that number will now be even higher.
Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media GmbH said, “We are delighted to welcome the team from Milestone to the family. After a long relationship in distribution across selected Koch territories, I am sure that the combined knowledge of our companies will open amazing new opportunities within a core market of the games industry. I am more than confident that the motivation and passion that drives the team at Milestone and the strong value within the racing segment are a solid foundation for future projects.”
While Luisa Bixio, Vice President Milestone, called joining Koch “an important step for our studio. Being run as a family business, which is built on the enthusiasm of its team members and centered around racing games, we are delighted to bring our expertise and knowledge into the company group and strive from the experience and knowledge outside of our core DNA. We are sure that the combination of our experiences will strengthen our position in our market segment and help us to bring more exciting games to our fans and extend the frontiers of racing within the gaming industry.”
THQ Nordic are planning to make a big splash at Gamescom this year, with three new games to be announced. So, keep an eye out for yet more THQ news next week! Yay!
