TLDR: Destiny 2 was back online Friday evening for an hour or so after being down for most of the day but was rather broken. It was taken back offline at 21.30hrs GMT but then was back and working fine, then was taken offline for maintenance for five hours before finally coming back online at 5am Saturday morning. Full story below!
Oh dear, all those early adopters of Google Stadia are going to be right pickle tonight as the one game they all could play is offline. Destiny 2 seems to have been broken for a good six hour on Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with Bungie being uncharacteristically quiet as to why the game is broken.
We are continuing to investigate issues preventing Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 players from signing in. Please standby for updates. https://t.co/vnO9hvI9BK

That is the only information they have given since around 1.30pm this afternoon, there is nothing on the Bungie website either. Start the game and you will be met with the message “Servers offline. Destiny 2 is currently unavailable. Watch help.bungie.net or @BungieHelp for updates as we work to restore service.”
However, as I was typing the words above I had Destiny 2 waiting on the error screen on my PS4 behind me, and it suddenly logged in! Huzzah! I am now wandering around a rather empty Tower, other players are slowly dropping in to the game. Friday night saved, everyone can get back to grinding!
UPDATE: Hang on… just tried to pick up a bounty from Zavala and I’m getting the “Attention: Contacting Destiny 2 severs” message and the game has frozen. And…. I’ve been kicked out the game. I’ve managed to sign in though, stay tuned for this breaking and fast moving news story!
UPDATE 2: Back in the Tower and said a cheery “Hiya babe!” to Master Rahool and asked him to decrypt an Engram. “Attention: Contacting Destiny 2 severs”, nothing from my Engram and…I’ve been kicked out the game. However, got an error code and it was Weasel.

Well I have not been banned so maybe something to do with crossplay is breaking the game?
UPDATE 3: Back in the game, Maneorix from the TSA clan seems to be playing a rather empty game of PvP and I have joined that and it seems to be working!
UPDATE 4: Nope, got kicked out again. Weasel again.
UPDATE 5: Lols. I can’t even change your weapons that also causes the game to crash. The app is also screwed. Maneorix says “I haven’t been kicked and can swap weapons but wouldn’t say pvp is fine”. I’ve managed a game of Gambit Prime, went back in to orbit, tried to change weapons and I’m kicked out again. Bungie have finally updated us with some news.
Issues impacting Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 services are still under investigation. Players logging in may encounter a variety of error codes, most prominently WEASEL.https://t.co/vnO9hvI9BK

It’s also being reported on Twitter than everyone’s clans have vanished, I have checked and this does seem to be the case, the TSA clan is no more!
UPDATE 6: Now we are back to where we started,”Servers offline. Destiny 2 is currently unavailable. Watch help.bungie.net or @BungieHelp for updates as we work to restore service.” I’m going to play something else, will check on D2 later.
UPDATE 7: 22.40hrs and the game is now reporting servers are at full capacity and a queuing system is in place. My place is the queue is 6743, there is no indication on how fast the queue will move. “This outage now has more content hours than Vex Offensive,” japes one user on the Destiny forums.
The good news is that after a fifteen minute wait I am in the game. The bad news is it’s still utterly broken, still cannot swap weapons but clans seem to be back.
UPDATE 8: 23.29hrs and everything seems to be working at last, weapons can be swapped, not getting server errors and clans are back. However, Bungie.Net clan features are offline for the moment.
As we continue to investigate issues impacting Destiny 1 and Destiny 2, Clan features on https://t.co/4ucwiEYycJ and the Destiny API are being taken offline. https://t.co/G9bYhkvquQ

UPDATE 9: 00.18hrs the game has now been taken offline for maintenance. I think I will call it a night and check back in the morning.
As we continue our investigations, we will be temporarily removing players from Destiny 1 and 2.
Players will be unable to log back in for a short time.
Standby for updates.

UPDATE 10: The gods of Jet Lag have decided I only get five hours sleep which coincidentally turned out to the length of the Destiny 2 downtime. According to Bungie everything should beack up and running.
At this time, Destiny 2 services are back online. Players can now log in normally on all platforms and we expect no further service interruptions.
Players who observe issues should report to the Help forum: https://t.co/9lcpiG3pif https://t.co/SSXqxvNJ5w
