Ghost Town Games and Team17 are taking us all out for dinner in Overcooked! 2 to celebrate the Chinese New Year this weekend and the start of the Year of the Rat. The Spring Festival is a free update to the game, adding a couple of new chefs and five new themed levels, and it’s out today!
The two new playable are, appropriately, a rat and a turtle, and you can play as these through the five new Chinese themed levels, as you battle against the clock, the recipes, the shifting levels and random appearance of Chinese dragons to deliver your orders in time. There’s be Dim sum, hot pots and fruit platters, amongst other things on the menu. All of this is being added in an update, so you won’t need to head to the store and download anything, it’ll just be there to find in the game!
They did something rather similar last year for the start of the Year of the Pig, again with two free characters (a dragon chef and pig chef), a handful of new levels and a Survival mode. This year’s freebies are a little lighter, but fans of the game will no doubt be chuffed to get a freebie.
Having loved the original game, we enjoyed this more refined experience when it came out in 2018. Jim wrote in our review, “It expands and refines exactly what we loved about the original, with plenty of fun and challenging stages to be played again and again, whether alone, with friends, or online. You couldn’t ask much more from this indie sequel: a filling follow-up that, while familiar, will have fans reaching for their aprons on launch day.”
The game is out now for PS4, Xbox One (where it’s part of Xbox Game Pass), Nintendo Switch and PC.
