Capcom’s hotly anticipated Resident Evil 3 remake is just weeks away from launch, the crew over at the Official PlayStation Blog giving us a much closer look at how it stacks up against the 1999 original.
Sitting down with the remake’s producer, Peter Fabiano, they compare some early moments from Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and its 2020 reimagining.
Naturally, a lot of what we see here will be familiar for those who played last year’s superb Resident Evil 2 remake. Many of the same systems, including inventory management and third person combat, have all been carried over with some additional bells and whistles.
During the playthrough, Fabiano explains that Resident Evil 3 was far more action orientated than Resident Evil 2, so we can also see that here with both remakes.
The game is still linear in terms of structure though there is far more open space to accommodate the changes in perspective from a fixed camera to an over-the-shoulder view.
That said environments will still force players into awkward positions at times, creating bottlenecks and situations where you’ll feel claustrophobic.
We see some early moment from Resident Evil 3 remade as Jill finds herself walking into a dead end with zombies pounding against a metal fence. As players back away they tear down the barricade, setting up one of the game’s first battles with a conveniently placed red barrel there to lend an explosive hand.
We also get to see Raccoon City in more detail. While Resident 2 is set within the same location, the 1998 survival horror classic was situated within the RCPD Headquarters and a handful of adjoining areas, Resident Evil 3 takes us deeper within the city. Kooky storefronts with their neon signs are almost constantly in view, injecting this sequel with more colour, emphasising Raccoon City as a character in itself.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Resident Evil 3 without Nemesis. The comparison video shows us one of Jill’s first run-ins with this hulking unit. What made him so terrifying in the original wasn’t just his invulnerability but a terrifying penchant to suddenly appear when/where you least expect him, usually as your health and ammo were running low!
Resident Evil 3 launches on April 3rd for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
