New Plague Inc. mode will let you save the world, not destroy it

When the first signs of the current coronavirus pandemic emerged, the already popular pandemic game Plague Inc. shot up the charts of various app stores, as people latched onto the game’s core idea of developing a super virus to take down the planet’s populace.

Soon you’ll be able to save the world, not destroy is, as developer Ndemic Creations have announced a free new mode for the game that will turn its central scenario on its head.

The team at Ndemic have been particularly conscious of their game’s place amongst all of this, and have consistently tried to raise awareness by pointing people to seek advice and follow guidelines established by the World Health Organisation and Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). On behalf of players of Plague Inc. they’ve made a $250,000 donation split between the CEPI and the WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, and will soon include links in game for players that would want to donate as well.

“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that so many players would be using Plague Inc. to help them get through an actual pandemic,” said James Vaughan, creator of Plague Inc. “We are proud to be able to help support the vital work of the WHO and CEPI as they work towards finding a vaccine for COVID-19.”

However, one thing that was prevalent through all of this was fan requests to let you stop an outbreak, not just accelerate it. While they’re still hard at work on it, Ndemic describe it as follows:

Players will have to balance managing disease progression and boosting healthcare systems as well as controlling real-world actions such as triaging, quarantining, social distancing and closing of public services. We are developing this game mode with the help of experts from the World Health Organisation, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Networkand more.

The game mode will come as a free update for all players, with more information to be shares as soon as it’s ready.
