Last year, THQ Nordic surprised everyone by revealing a remaster of SpongBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini Bottom with a Rehydrated version. It came out of nowhere but SpongeBob’s popularity has endured all of these years, and so the decision was made to bring back one of the character’s more notable games. Now, THQ Nordic has confirmed that SpongeBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated will be released on June 23rd for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.
Some new gameplay was released today showing SpongeBob and Patrick wandering around Jellyfish Fields.
The original version of the game, released in 2003, was published by the original THQ before they went bust. It was developed by Heavy Iron Studios but this new version seems to be handled by Purple Lamp Studios. It was released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube and features a story in which you defend Bikini Bottom from a robot invasion. In 2006 Edge magazine put the Game Boy Advance version as number 34 in “The Century’s Top 50 Handheld Games,” and the PS2 version was number 67 in their “The Top 100 Games of the 21st Century.”, the positions dictated by the number of copies sold.
THQ Nordic has been buying up and bringing back franchises for a while now, itself having risen from the ashes of THQ. The company own a huge number of franchises now including Destroy All Humans, Titan Quest, Kingdoms of Amalur, Carmageddon, Red Faction, MX vs ATV, and Darksiders. They have cautioned that not all the IPs they have picked up will be getting a new game but many are hoping for a new Timesplitters.
