Saber Interactive’s SnowRunner has turned out to be quite the sleeper hit. Although we’ve sampled the dev’s unique brand of driving simulator before (see MudRunner and Spintires) there’s something strangely intoxicating when it come to hauling cargo through the dirt and ice.
SnowRunner is a more robust package compared to its forebears and although there are some bugs and other niggling issues to iron out, it has been warmly received by both console and PC players.
However, those hoping to help a friend who owns the game on another system will find themselves out of luck. At the time of publication, Saber Interactive have confirmed that there is no cross-platform play for Snowrunner.
So, if you were looking to rope Xbox One and PC users into your PS4 session, that’s a complete no go for now.
Shunning cross-play obviously comes with a major downside. By dividing the playerbase between different systems, matchmaking queues are naturally much longer. While there is no exact data available, it’s safe to assume that the PC SnowRunner community dwarfs that of both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Connecting them via cross-play would be a great feature though one that requires work Saber Interactive probably wants to avoid.
Giving the somewhat niche appeal of SnowRunner we’d say that a future cross-play update is off the table unless the game happens to enjoy a unexpected spike in popularity, specifically its online multiplayer.
In our review, Dom was really quite enamoured by SnowRunner and the methodical yet calm approach it demands from its ice road truckers. He scored the sequel a masterful 9 out of 10, saying:
SnowRunner is a game thoroughly, single-mindedly, in love with the open road. It just happens that it’s the kind of love that’s bred by getting that road so thoroughly under your nails, you occasionally have to wonder whether it’s actually hate. Care, attention and time will show that SnowRunner is a passion project worth putting the extra mile in for.
SnowRunner is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (exclusively via the Epic Games Store).
