Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla’s map may be a bit bigger than Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s

I do not know if you played Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey but let me tell you that map was at times overwhelmingly huge. The entirety of Ancient Greece scaled down to fit into the game, and you would spend absolute hours, walking, running, sailing, or riding a horse to explore every nook and cranny. The map has some empty areas but usually you are not too far away from some kind of event. So, one of the questions on people’s minds about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the map size for that, and if you were expecting something a bit more compact you’re expectations have pretty much been dashed.

YouTuber Julien Chièze and Ubisoft Montréal producer Julien Laferrière held an interview regarding Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and the question of the map came up. In his answer, Julien said that the map would probably be a bit larger than Odyssey’s. This is down to all of England and parts of Norway being in the game. With England being similar in size to Greece the addition of Norway would push it over. How, that world will be filled is yet to be fully revealed considering the different kingdoms did not have a ton of large cities.

We do know that the hidden blade will be a major component once more for Eivor, and it will be able to instakill some enemies. The game will begin at Eivor’s home in Norway before heading off to England. A returning element will be creating a village settlement that acts as the hub for Eivor and their fellow Vikings, which you’ll be looking to grow through your time with the game, with the story centred around this element.

Naturally they’ll be tapping into elements of Norse mythology, as well as featuring a raven to be Eivor’s animal companion to help explore the world, much like the eagles of previous games. Meanwhile, your adventures can head our across both land and water, though Longships are primarily a means of transport.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is expected Holiday 2020 for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

  1. Well, that’s not really much of a surprise then. Origins had a decent sized map. Odyssey went far too big. And now we get something even bigger? And probably with huge areas of nothing except random crap to fill up the map.

What are the chances they saw the power of the PS5/Series X and realised it can handle up to a million map icons? And the PS4/XBone versions will run like shit because of that. Or we’ll discover a new bluescreen error number you rush off to look up (because Sony like unhelpful error messages) and find it just says “Too many map icons – buy a PS5”.

Still, I’m sure it’ll be just like the previous games. Equal parts entertaining nonsense and frustrating bits. And it’s got a raven. Ravens are basically parrots for goths, so that’ll be fun. Not sure they’re quite as threatening as eagles, which are kind of deadly sky sharks. Ravens won’t threaten your enemies in quite the same day. They’ll just be sitting on busts and tapping on chamber doors.

  2. Booooo! Size does matter Ubisoft, smaller is better. That’s what my girlfriend tells me and why would she lie?

    • Look, not everyone’s into a 120 hour tantric gaming experience.

  3. I enjoyed Origins, but Odyssey was too big and gave up after about 10 hours. I’d prefer a ridiculously detailed, realistic version of York, than trying to cram a whole country into a map.
