Sony spends $250 million to get a minority stake in Epic Games

Sony and Epic Games have announced that Sony now has a minority stake in the Fortnite developer after spending $250 million. This deal does not stop Epic from publishing its games on other platforms, nor will it impact how it runs its own Epic Games Store. What it will do is strengthen the partnership between the two companies. After all, Epic recently showcased Unreal Engine 5 on the PS5 through Lumen in the Land of Nanite.

Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman, President and CEO, Sony Corporation, said:

“Epic’s powerful technology in areas such as graphics places them at the forefront of game engine development with Unreal Engine and other innovations. There’s no better example of this than the revolutionary entertainment experience, Fortnite. Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape.”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, said:

“Sony and Epic have both built businesses at the intersection of creativity and technology, and we share a vision of real-time 3D social experiences leading to a convergence of gaming, film, and music. Together we strive to build an even more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators alike.”

Sony’s stake will not come close to the share of the company that Tencent has, nor will it eclipse Tim Sweeney who has the largest share of the company. It is unlikely this new investment will change how Epic Games will operate on a day to day basis, but we will likely see a lot of exclusive content, timed or otherwise, coming to the PS5 and any other platforms Sony will bring out in the future.

  1. Tencent bought 48.4% of Epic in 2012 for $330m. And so somehow own 40% of it. Because reasons.

Sony paid $250m and own 1.4%. Which makes Tencent’s 40% worth about 7 billion dollars. And the whole company worth $17.8b. Which is just silly.
