Paper Mario: The Origami King Water Vellumental sliding puzzle solution

There’s two types of bosses in Paper Mario: The Origami King, with the mythical Vellumentals hiding away in temples and hidden shrines waiting for you to discover them and let Olivia earn their powers.

However, to reach them and do battle, you’ll first have to make your way through their hiding spots. For the Water Vellumental, that throws up a pair of sliding puzzles at you, that’s you’ll need to solve. It’s a potential sticking point on an otherwise pretty easy-going adventure.

Here’s the Paper Mario: The Origami King Water Vellumental sliding puzzle solutions:

Paper Mario: The Origami King Water Vellumental sliding puzzle solution – The First Puzzle

OK, so calling this first one a puzzle is a bit of a stretch, with just four spaces and only being able to to slide the blocks around in either direction. That said, to solve the puzzle, you first need to acquire the missing square.

To find this, notice the Sidestepper crab sticking its head out of the wall in the top left corner. Head over there and smack the wall with your hammer to reveal a hidden room. Now you’ll have to reach the far end of this room and time a jump into the POW block when the Sidestepper with the block is running through. Then slap them with your hammer hit to battle them and take the block back.

Once you return to the sliding blocks, shift them until the empty space is in the bottom left hand corner, and then press A to insert the missing panel.

Paper Mario: The Origami King Water Vellumental sliding puzzle solution – The Second Puzzle

The second puzzle is where things get trickier. Now the puzzle is a 3×3 grid, and you’ll have to shuffle the pieces like a picture puzzle. But first, you still need to retrieve the missing square.

Head to the top left and again break through the crack in the wall with your hammer. Head through the hole and then drop down to the lower level where you’ll find another crack in the wall to break and another secret room! Here you’ll have a wave battle against Sidesteppers to claim the next sliding piece.

Returning to the sliding puzzle, you need to move and rotate the pieces in a particular order. If you want to give it a go yourself, feel free, and there’s also some hints to be found at the podium. You can always reset the puzzle by leaving the room and coming back in.

Here’s what the finished puzzle should look like:

Here’s the most direct set of inputs that we’ve found to solve this brainteaser, handily broken into sets of four:

With the water flowing through the puzzle, grab the coins and items that have dropped from the roof, head through the green pipe on the left hand side of the room, and get ready for a battle with the Water Vellumental!
