Ex-Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has revealed that the company had serious conversations with notable rapper and former presidential candidate Kanye West with regards to making a game together.
Kanye spoke to Mario developer Shigeru Miyamoto at E3 who then passed on the message to Reggie. “Part of it was talking about what he was up to. He was experimenting with a piece of video game content. He wanted reactions to it. He comes out and says: ‘I want to work with Nintendo,” said Fils-Aimé on the Talking Games with Reggie & Harold charity podcast.
A formal meeting was set up but ultimately Nintendo declined the offer as they were too busy working on other projects. “We had so many different projects at Nintendo going on, the possibility of doing something with Kanye just wasn’t there,” explains Reggie, “And so I had to find a way to politely decline this opportunity to work with him.”
The news was broken by Reggie to both Kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian. “I told him, ‘Kanye, you don’t want to work with us because we’re tough, we’re hard. All we do is push for the very best content. We would not be the type of partner you would want to work with’,” Fils-Aimé continues. “And he looks at me and says, ‘Reggie, you’re exactly the type of partner I want because of that reason!’ It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh’.”
This isn’t the first time Kanye has tried to get a game developed, back in 2016 he announced that he was making a game in which you guided his dead mother through the after life. The game, Only One, had a trailer and was being developed by Encyclopedia Pictura but seems to have been in development for just a few months before the project died and Encyclopedia Picture stopped working on it.
*shouts off camera* Hey I go through that without calling Kanye a massive bellend!
