Lorne Lanning stopped by at the PlayStation State of Play stream to give us another look at the long awaited Oddworld: Soulstorm and reveal that the game will be coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on 6th April. Not only that, but the PlayStation 5 version of the game will be free for all PlayStation Plus subscribers. That’s a nice surprise!
Soulstorm is a remake of the second Oddworld game, following on from the New ‘n’ Tasty remake of the original. In it Abe finds himself the unwitting leader of a revolution, forced to lead the fight against the all-powerful Glukkons.
The game’s side-scrolling platforming is given more depth than ever before with what Oddworld Inhabitants call ‘2.9D’ platforming, building the game world out into the third dimension to make the world more immersive.
On PlayStation 5, the game will use the DualSense controller to give you Abe’s heart beat in suspenseful and high-tension situations. Since there’s over 1000 Mudokons that you can try to save, and they can be used in a variety of ways to solve puzzles, provide energy, and even fight back alongside you, when given the right tools.
Abe can scavenge, loot and pickpocket from the surrounding and craft tools and weapons that he can share, though he can also play as a pacifist. Of course, he still has his ability to possess other, taking control of enemies to use their strength and weapons against them.
Oddworld: Soulstorm was originally announced in 2016, so like all Oddworld games, is taken forever to be developed. In 2017 the title sequence was released for Oddworld: Soulstorm. However, it wasn’t until 2019 that a cinematic teaser was released, followed by a gameplay teaser. Things have ramped up over the last year with the game appearing at the PS5 showcase, then at The Game Awards, and then in an Epic Games Store showcase (to tout its exclusivity to that store front), and now this announcement and partnership with Sony.
