Well, here’s some unexpected news for you Rocket League fans out there. Developer Psyonix have announced a new Rocket League game which will be free-to-play, launching later this year.
Now, there are two key differences to note here compared to your regular Rocket League. Rogue League Sideswipe will launch exclusively on mobile platforms including Apple iOS and Android. Not only that, it will adopt a 2D, side-on perspective.
Crafted with mobile gamers in mind, each Rocket League Sideswipe match is capped at two minutes and only allow for 1v1 or 2v2 set ups. As you can see from the alpha gameplay footage, the arena is much smaller to accommodate for the Sideswipe’s tighter focus.
Here’s the official game synopsis from Psyonix themselves:
Rocket League Sideswipe will feature mobile controls that are easy to pick up whether you’re a master of Rocket League or a new player still learning your way around the field. Plus, there are advanced mechanics, just like Rocket League, for those who want to climb the Competitive Ranks. In the garage, Rocket League Sideswipe will have robust car customization similar to Rocket League. Players can also expect an online Ranking system for competitive play. We have a lot more to reveal about the game in the coming months as we get closer to release.
The Rocket League developer didn’t confirm when Sideswipe will be available to download and play though they will be running tests ahead of launch. A regional alpha has already gone live in select territories including Australia and New Zealand.
Rocket League officially went free to play late last year across all platforms, even eschewing the need for a PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Online subscription on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Season Two kicked off in December 2020 and will be running through until April 7th, featuring a new Rocket Pass loaded with unlockable cosmetics and other goodies.
