After taking a hiatus for a year following the poor reception that WWE 2K20 received, 2K has announced the existence of WWE 2K22. It is a short trailer with wrestling legend Rey Mysterio taking the spotlight. There is a bit of footage from an in progress build of WWE 2K22, in which Mysterio faces off against Cesaro, though 2K does not state of which platforms the footage is representative of.
Last year, WWE 2K Battlegrounds replaced WWE 2K21 due to the major issues the mainline entry to the WWE franchise had from a gameplay experience perspective. At the time, 2K released a statement saying:
“We are applying what we’ve learned to the next WWE 2K simulation game with a renewed focus on quality and fun. As part of that commitment, we are extending the production timeline and will not be releasing a WWE 2K simulation game in 2020 (T2 fiscal year 2021). We want to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game that will entertain grizzled WWE 2K veterans, as well as newcomers who want to climb through the ropes and step into the ring for the very first time.”
There is no time frame yet for when WWE 2K22 will be released, with the trailer saying coming soon. Usually, the WWE 2K games release in October, though WWE 2K Battlegrounds did release in September. If we follow this pattern then it is likely WWE 2K22 will be released late September to mid October. While platforms have not been confirmed it is likely WWE 2K22 will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. While WWE 2K18 and WWE 2K Battlegrounds did release on Switch, the absence of 2K19 and 2K20 could mean that 2K22 does not come to Nintendo’s console.
