The gameplay debut for Abandoned was meant to drop last month but has since been delayed to August. The game’s developer, Blue Box Game Studios, say that the PS5 reveal needs more polish. There’s a good chance they are also trying to distance themselves from rampant fan speculation surrounding the upcoming horror title. Others have suggested that this delay will coincide with a yet-to-be-announced PlayStation State of Play broadcast that will showcase upcoming PS5 games.
Abandoned has caused quite a stir. Announced as a PS5 exclusive, online pundits immediately tried to link the game to Silent Hill and Hideo Kojima. We still don’t know what the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding mastermind is working on though he had previously helmed Silent Hills before the project was canned. There’s some very interesting discussion around the game, the P.T. demo, and Kojima’s relationship with Silent Hill publisher Konami.
Blue Box Game Studios stress that they have no affiliation with Konami or Silent Hill. “We wanted to set things straight,” Hasan Kahraman, Blue Box Games director, says. “We have no relations with Konami. Silent Hill is owned by Konami. We do not have any relations with Hideo Kojima. It was never our intention to tease the name as Silent Hill. We sincerely apologize for this.”
Whatever Abandoned turns out to be, we’ll find out in August. It’s hard to say whether it will feature at an upcoming State of Play event though Sony is surely due for another broadcast in the near future.
As for Silent Hill, the rumour mill hasn’t stopped spinning. It was revealed earlier this week that Konami have entered a strategic partnership with Bloober Team who will likely be working on the next game in the series. Bloober Team have aligned themselves as a horror focused studio, having developed Layers of Fear, The Medium, Layers of Fear 2, and Blair Witch.
