Microsoft has announced the Games with Gold for August, with four free games being handed out to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Same as usual, but are this month’s games any good?
What are September’s Xbox Games with Gold?
The four games are the usual mixture of two Xbox One titles and two Xbox and Xbox 360 games that can be played via backward compatibility. The four games will be made available at different points through the month, as follows:
- Warhammer: Chaosbane – 1st to 30th September
- Mulaka – 16th September to 15th October
- Zone of the Enders HD Collection (Xbox 360 BC) – 1st to 15th September
- Samurai Shodown II (Xbox 360 BC) – 16th to 30th September
Chaosbane looks to be a good shout for anyone that’s got a soft spot for action RPG dungeon crawling. in fact, that’s exactly what we said in our Warhammer: Chaosbane review:
“Warhammer: Chaosbane is a good, solid dungeon crawling action RPG, but outside of a well executed Warhammer theme it’s just not doing anything new. I feel bad for underselling Chaosbane, as I did enjoy my time with it. However, it’s standing in the shadow of Diablo III, a titan that’s been doing it for a long time and that you can’t help but make comparisons with. Warhammer: Chaosbane is good and it could mature into something great, but right now it pales next to its daddy.”
The other Xbox One game is Mulaka, a game that gives insight into the folklore of the Taramuhara people. How does it hold up as a game? See our Mulaka review here.
We then have to step all the way back to 2012 for the other big game in the selection: Zone of Enders HD Collection. In our review, we opined:
“ZoE2 is worth the price of admission alone just for being a fantastic standalone action mech game (and that’s not including the extras included within like the special missions), though ZoE1 is a decent introduction to the series if you really want to invest yourself into the series and the backstory.”
Can I still download the August 2021Â Games with Gold Games?
Yes! You can still grab half of last month’s games. Due to Microsoft’s staggered windows Lost PLanet 3Â has already exited the service, but the the other three games are still available:
- Darksiders III – until 31st August
- Yooka-Laylee – until 15th September
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves (Xbox 360 BC) – until 31st August
