Splatoon 3 new “Return of the Mammalians” trailer reveals the story mode and new weapons

A new trailer has dropped for Splatoon 3, the hotly anticipated multiplayer shooter sequel for Nintendo Switch. It features a first glimpse of some new weapons for the competitive game modes, as well as giving us some clues as to what we’ll face in the new Story Mode, dubbed “Return of the Mammalians”.

There’s something hairy that this way comes with fuzzy looking versions of the enemies that we saw in the first two games. Thankfully you won’t be facing this alone, with plenty of returning characters like Callie and Marie to point you in the right direction.

From what they’ve shown, it looks pretty ace.

On the multiplayer side of things, there seems to be a set of thoroughly crazy new weapons and abilities. A crab-like ball bot and a new grappling ability are both sure to be rather popular in the arenas of Splatsville. That’s obviously in addition to the previously revealed bow weapons, a whole bevvy of new customisation options, and your own Small Fry little buddy.

Splatoon 3 was announced back in February, with a target release for 2022, and progress has seemingly been going quite well, from what this trailer has shown. It looks like it’s going to truly surpass Splatoon 2 in a lot of ways.

Speaking of which, let’s look back at our Splatoon 2 review, where I wrote:

“A fairly straightforward sequel to one of the Wii U’s best games, Splatoon 2’s unique take on the online multiplayer shooter is as fresh as ever on Switch. Nintendo still have one foot in the past with online functionality, stubbornly sticking to their (paint) guns when they should be learning from others, but these flaws are easily covered up once you get into a game. At its heart, Splatoon 2 is a second helping of one of the most inventive shooters of the last decade.

I’m looking forward to the third helping…
