A new entry in the Valkyrie action RPG series has been announced, with Valkyrie Elysium coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2022.

Revealed during the State of Play stream, Valkyrie Elysium is set with the world on the brink of destruction. Square Enix describe the game as “an action RPG with an epic story, beautiful environments, and new, fast-paced combat that incorporates the Valkyrie series’ classic special attack and combo systems.”

The Valkyrie series has bounced around a fair bit over the years, never really settling on a particular platform. The original game, Valkyrie Profile, launched for PlayStation in 1999, while the sequel Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria emerged in 2006 for PlayStation 2. After that, Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume shifted over to the Nintendo DS in 2008, and the series was warmed up for an iOS/Android game in 2016 with Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin.

Valkyrie Elysium is a big return to home consoles, then, and its style of action RPG gameplay looks sure to find a certain cachet with gamers. Oh, and there’s some good ol’ Naruto running as well!

It was quite a busy showing from Square Enix, who also dropped a new Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins trailer and game demo, a new trailer for Forspoken, and they also announced a new tactical RPG called The DioField Chronicle. There’s a lot of Square Enix games coming out in the foreseeable future!

  1. Not to be confused, as I have just done, with Valkyria Chronicles! Thought what a shame it was they moved away from the painted aesthetic and WW2 theme. Which they have not, as it’s a different game series.
