Silent Hill creator, Keiichiro Toyama, and father of Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami, sit down to talk horror games and their storied legacies within the gaming industry.
This treat of an interview is the first part in a “Golden Hour” series of videos from Bokeh Game Studios, the team working on upcoming horror title, Slitterhead.
Pioneers of the genre, together Toyama and Mikami would create the blueprint for survival horror games in a rivalry that saw Capcom and Konami faceoff for many years. Both Silent Hill and Resident Evil enjoyed ground-breaking debuts, followed by a flurry of sequels. During the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, however, both series would fall on hard time though Resident Evil has seen a remarkable comeback. Meanwhile, with Konami allowing its beloved IP to collect dust, there’s no sign of a Silent Hill return. Of course, there has been rampant speculation surrounding the series, the most popular rumour suggesting that Sony may be involved with the next SH game.
Keiichiro Toyama, who also created Forbidden Siren and Gravity Rush, moved on a long time ago. Forming Bokeh Game Studios, last year we finally got our first look at their first title – Slitterhead.
Looking like a wild action horror game with creepy monsters morphing out of human forms and into creepy and otherworldly shapes. Expect melee combat, perhaps teleporting between bodies, and more weirdness. Alas, we still know very little about the game at this time, but the trailer looks like a good bit of fun, doesn’t it? There’s definitely a spot of The Thing to the unsettling transformations.
As for Shinji Mikami, it’s been a long time since he helmed a Resident Evil game. Having founded Tango Gameworks, the studio is part of Bethesda – and now, technically, part of Microsoft. The developer’s latest game, Ghostwire Tokyo, launched on PC and PS5 earlier this month. Read more in our Ghostwire Tokyo review.
