Return To Monkey Island announced and it is releasing this year

Return To Monkey Island Header

Return To Monkey Island has been revealed by Devolver Digital with both Lucasfilm Games and Ron Gilbert on board. As of now platforms have not been confirmed for Return To Monkey Island, and we do not know when during this year the game will be released. The trailer does not give much away either but does incorporate a bit of the comedy you would come to expect from the Monkey Island franchise.

The Secret of Monkey Island was the first game in the series, releasing all the way back in 1990. This was followed up by Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge in 1991. The Curse of Monkey Island followed six years later, releasing in 1997, and finally Escape from Monkey Island in 2000. Tales of Monkey Island came in 2009 for Wii and PC, with Telltale Games taking the lead on that one. Return To Monkey Island is a direct follow up to Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s revenge.

What can we expect then? Obviously, intrepid but inept Guybrush Threepwood will be back facing off against the undead LeChuck. Other than that we do not know much else. Story details are under wraps for now, so we do not know which of Monkey Island’s secrets will be uncovered, and what kind of antics Guybrush will find himself dealing with. All we know is that the allure of Monkey Island remains and players are going back.

  1. I’m really excited Ron Gilbert and the gang are working on this – they made the first 2 but none of the others.

This announcement makes me want to play the originals!

  2. Fantastic, loved the originals!!

  3. I loved the originals, i wasn’t keen on that Telltale version but the trailer above inspires more confidence for the sequel.
