Minecraft movie to star Jason Momoa

A Minecraft movie has been in development for years after Warner Bros acquired the rights quite a few years ago. In 2016, Warner Bros dated the movie for a 2019 release, but that never happened obviously. The Minecraft movie was delayed in 2018 and 2019. At the time a March 2022 release was targeted, but the global pandemic put that notion to rest.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jason Momoa has been signed up to star in the Minecraft movie. Jared Hess is taking on the directing role for the movie with a number of producers on board including Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Vu Bui, Mary Parent, Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts. Jill Messick, who passed away in 2018, will also be credited as she was working on the project before her death.

The plot for the Minecraft movie is “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

It has not been made clear what role Jason Momoa will play, though it is unlikely to be the teenage girl unless he is doing similar to what Jack Black did in Jumanji. He will probably be one of the adventurers in the group. It does seem that the release of the Minecraft movie could still be at least a couple of years away, so maybe do not expect it until at least 2024 or 2025.
