Netflix’s Resident Evil series will start streaming in July

Netflix has released a first teaser trailer for their live action Resident Evil streaming TV show, and given it a release date. The Resident Evil TV series will start streaming on 14th July 2022.

The teaser introduces us to Billie and Jade Wesker as they move to New Raccoon City, and Lance Reddick (who is presumably daddy Wesker) is sure that they’re going to “love it here”.

Quick cuts to show the sprawling Umbrella tech campus, experiments on quickly zombified rats, and then a leap forward to London in 2036 which is now filled with zombies. Looks like Brexit has gone really well for us over the next decade… And the rest of the planet as well. From previous announcements, we know that the series runs in two time periods, with the later of the two after the population of the planet has been decimated, with just 15 million people left alive.

Confirmed back in 2020, the series will consist of eight episodes each lasting an hour with Supernatural’s Andrew Dabb writing and Bronwen Hughes (The Walking Dead) directing the first two episodes. It’s been developed Constantin Films, the same team who made the movies, which may indication some sort of continuation of the films. However, the mythology of the films has been rather, flexible, over the six movies and strayed rather far away from the video games, not that Capcom’s games haven’t been going in some wild directions of late.

Netflix also commissioned Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness a CG anime that came to Netflix last year.

The TV and film streaming company has been in the headlines for plenty of wrong reasons over the last couple months, as they’ve struggled with a downturn in public perception. There’s been long-running complaints over a lack of commitment to series that have gained decent followings, but the last few months has seen backlash to an announced price-hike in the monthly subscription, and confirmation of plans to go after users sharing passwords, and introduce adverts for the first time. We’ll see how well that goes for what was once a pioneering streaming service, but now finds itself surrounded by competitors.
