Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie gets a heart racing new trailer

A new trailer for Zach Cregger’s take on Resident Evil has dropped and it’s rather good, amping up the tension without giving too much away.

Cregger has previously directed the excellent Barbarian and  – writers’ own opinion – the slightly boring Weapons, and has taken a new approach to a movie version of Resident Evil.

Rather than feature Chris, Jill and the usual cast, this story takes place adjacent to the events of Resident Evil 1 with medical courier Bryan (Austin Abrams) doing one last delivery which goes very, very wrong.

“I have been such a giant fan of those games since two came out and I have played all of them,” he told Mamas Geeky. “I love spending time in the worlds. I love the pacing of the games. It’s not survival action, it’s survival horror. You always feel like you have just enough to survive but probably not. And that is so portable into a movie. I just wanted to make a movie that would celebrate everything I think make those games so special, but not cannibalize the stories that those games tell so well.”

“Because I don’t think I can tell Leon’s story better than the games tell Leon’s story. That, to me, feels like a losing endeavour.”

Milla Jovovich’s run of Resident Evil films may not have been the best cinema or much to do with Resident Evil, but they did make a huge amount of money, with over $1.2 billion at the box office, so there’s certainly an audience for a new movie.

Resident Evil will be in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
