Update: The Sonic Frontiers trailer released during Opening Night Live, confirming the leaked 8th November release date.
Oh dear, the trailer for Sonic Frontiers which is going to released as part of Gamescom Opening Night Live was mistakenly set to live on YouTube for a few minutes. It was taken down very quickly but not before it was swiped and uploaded to Twitter.
Here is the back up :) pic.twitter.com/wuh2mnx3wJ

As you can see the game has a release date of November 8th, presumably that’s the world wide release date.
So, does that new trailer help improve your thoughts on Sonic Frontiers?
Sonic Frontiers has had whatever the opposite of a hype train is gaining speed ever since its first gameplay reveal in the run up to Summer Game Fest in June. Sonic Team is pushing the franchise in a new open world direction with Sonic whisked away to the mysterious Starfall Islands, doing battle with angular, robotic foes and solving environmental puzzles.
Many were quick to make comparisons to the likes of The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Xenoblade Chronicles also came up as a source of visual design inspiration. The internet at large was also quick to say it didn’t look all that good – something backed up by Miguel who went hands on with Sonic Frontiers at SGF.
However, that was before the reveal of Cyber Space. These more directed, linear levels take place in a digital realm, breaking up the open world gameplay with something that can break the conventions of the rest of the game’s direction and bring back things like Green Hill Zone.
Continuing his thoughts from SGF, Miguel said, “From beginning to end, my time with the Cyber Space stage was an incredibly brief 2 minutes, but that couple of minutes held more engaging and satisfying gameplay than the rest of my time with Sonic Frontiers. In a way, the impressive quality of this Cyber Space stage just makes me even more disappointed by the rest of what I played. Part of me wonders why Sonic Frontiers doesn’t take place in a wide and expansive version of the vibrant zones you run through in these Cyber Space stages.”
We’ll be going hands on with a newer demo of the game at Gamescom. Stay tuned for some updated thoughts on the game soon!
