The Yakuza series samurai spin-off Yakuza Ishin is coming to the West is a new remake Like a Dragon: Ishin. The game is coming to PS5 and PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and PC in February 2023 with a worldwide release.
Set in 1860s Japan and the fictionalised version of Kyoto named Kyo, the game follows a samurai that looks an awful lot like Kazuma Kiryu at a pivotal point of Japanese history, as Western influence comes to the insulated society.
Sega’s David Hinds writes on the PS Blog explaining that, “In Ishin, Kiryu is cast as Sakamoto Ryoma and brings the rest of his crew along too. Goro Majima and other Yakuza celebrities join Ryoma as friends and foes in this fictional world that trades the flashy streets of Tokyo for the chaotic bustle of 1860s Kyo. These new character dynamics are as thrilling as they are unexpected, with a series of mind-blowing twists and turns in a story only RGG studio can tell.”
It will be the third game remake in the Yakuza series, following on from the acclaimed Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 remakes. The major shift is that RGG has moved on from their in-house game engine and is building Like a Dragon: Ishin in Unreal Engine 4.
