The timed PlayStation 5 exclusive Deathloop will be joining Xbox Game Pass and launching for Xbox Series X|S next week on 20th September, Microsoft has announced, with a Tokyo Game Show game library update also coming today.
This is perhaps one of the least surprising announcements that Microsoft could be making, given how well understood it was that Deathloop would be coming to Xbox one year after its release on PS5. Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo both released on Sony’s console as timed exclusives in deals that Bethesda and Sony had struck well before the surprise acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft in late 2020.
With that acquisition, Microsoft and Bethesda both affirmed that existing contracts would be honoured, meaning that the timed exclusivity would be in effect. Of course, once the year was up, Microsoft would be free to launch the game on their own consoles, and add it to Xbox Game Pass.
What’s perhaps more surprising is that Microsoft and Sony struck a deal to bring Deathloop to PlayStation Plus Extra, which will also be happening on 20th September.
Alongside the release, Arkane will also deliver the Goldenloop Update to the game, adding a new weapon, a powerful new ability, new enemy types, an extended ending and more.
Deathloop was easily one of the best games released in 2021, with Arkane wrapping an immersive sim around a central timeloop mechanic and a compelling mystery to unravel.
In our 10/10 Deathloop review, Aran said:
“Deathloop is the kind of game that will get in your head and stay there even when you’re not playing. Colt is a great protagonist, the intricate environmental design is a dream to explore, and the loop system keeps things fresh and offers so much replayability. Simply put, Deathloop is fantastic.”
In addition to Deathloop next week, Microsoft also celebrated Tokyo Game Show 2022 by throwing a bunch of other games onto Xbox Game Pass. As of today, the following are all a part of Game Pass:
- Assassin’s Creed; Odyssey
- Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony Anniversary Edition
- Fuga; Melodies of Steel
- Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
They also confirmed that Guilty Gear Strive, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Special Edition and Dyson Sphere Program will all be coming to Game Pass in the future.
