Onimusha anime series announced for Netflix

Onimusha Anime

Capcom’s Onimusha series making a return but not in video game form. Instead, Netflix has announced that an Onimusha anime series is in production for the streaming platform. No release date has been confirmed yet. It is being directed by Takashi Miike, who has previously worked on Yakuza Apocalypse and Ace Attorney. The announcement came with a few shots from the Onimusha anime, which you can view below.

The last time anything Onimusha related came out was the remaster of Onimusha Warlords in 2019, which originally released on PS2. In our review for Onimusha Warlords, I wrote, “For the relatively low asking price Onimusha Warlords is worth a look if you’ve ever been interested in the series or just want to slay demons in historical Japan. Just beware you’ll have to contend with some game design elements that belong in the early 2000s. It’s not a terribly long game and you can get through it in a few hours, but it’ll keep you entertained throughout.”

The Onimusha franchise began with the released of Onimusha: Warlords in 2001. This was followed a year later by Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. In 2003 spin offs Onimusha Tactics and Onimusha Blade Warriors released, followed by Onimusha 3: Demon Siege in 2004. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams arrived in 2006. A Japan only browser game called Onimusha Soul was released in 2012, and then there was nothing until 2019 with the first game’s remaster. There was also a title that never saw the light of day called Onimusha: Curtain of Darkness.

Whether the anime, along with the 2019 remaster release, is something Capcom is using to gauge interest in the franchise is unknown. It could be that if viewing figures are high then Capcom may consider another Onimusha game, be it a remaster or an Onimusha 4. Only time will tell if that is the case though.
