A Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remaster is reportedly in development

Hot on the heels of The Last of Us Part I, it looks like Sony might have another remaster in the works, with reports emerging that a a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster is in development for PlayStation 5.

The reports came from MP1ST and have been backed up by VGC, claiming that an updated version of the 2017 hit would bring the title to the newer iteration of Guerrilla Games’ engine from Horizon Forbidden West, updating it with new character models, lighting, animations, and also refining things like accessibility features and add quality of life improvements to the core gameplay.

At the very base level, this would also free Horizon Zero Dawn from the PS4 backward compatibility mode that it currently runs in on PS5, allowing for more graphics options and to take advantage of things like VRR (variable refresh rate). The PS4 version was previously given a performance patch to enable the PS5 to run at 60fps and 2160p with checkerboarding, but 120fps acolytes might want more.

The scale of this remaster wouldn’t really need to be as large as the wholesale remake of The Last of Us for The Last of Us Part I. That was a PS3 game originally, with a more significant jump forward in graphical quality possible. You might instead consider this Horizon Zero Dawn remaster to be similar in scope to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, which came out alongside the PS5 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales and brought the new generation improvements like ray-tracing to the older gamer.

Another side to this leak is that this is not the only Horizon game in development, with the persistent rumours that there’s a multiplayer game being made in the universe. Details on this, however, are even thinner.

We scored the game a great 8/10 upon its original 2017 release, enjoying the deep sci-fi tale that Guerrilla told, the precision battling against the robots that now roam the Earth, and soaking in the technical showcase that Guerrilla had cooked up on PS4.
