Nintendo and Illumination have released the second official trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, giving us a different view on the story it’s telling, the visual direction it’s taking, and properly introducing Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will debut on 7th April in North America and 28th April in Japan. It’s now also been confirmed for 31st March in the UK and 29th March in France.
Once more, the second trailer gets across the humorous tone that Illumination has gone for with the film – similar to the first trailer.
It introduces Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, while also giving us a little more of a look at Chris Pratt’s… very subdued Mario accent, Charlie Day’s Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser.
While there’s some new ideas, like Mario and DK duking it out in a coliseum, to Peach taking on much more of a leading role to her nation’s defence against Bowser, there’s also sequences and ideas lifted from the game, playing homage to the decades of history in the franchise. That coliseum features the kinds of girders seen in the original Mario Bros. game, there’s a training sequence that looks like the Super Mario Bros. 2D platformers, and it goes all the way to having Mario Kart racing on Rainbow Road!
So, what do you think? Is Chris Pratt’s accent grown on you at all?
Nintendo will be hoping the film follows in the footsteps of the hit Detective Pikachu movie that delighted fans of the Pokémon franchise when it released in 2019. It was a huge box office hit and showed Nintendo (via The Pokémon company) what modern animations and adaptations can achieve. However, Mario will now have to try and beat the records being set by his early 90’s rival, Sonic.
