Watch the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer here – you’ll never guess what Mario sounds like

The Super Mario Bros. Movie teaser trailer has been released, giving us a look at this latest big budget video game adaptation. Check it out:

There’s a good bit of humour in the trailer, as Bowser’s giant floating lava-filled island fort crashes down by an icy penguin kingdom and battle ensues, building up to Bowser managing to snag a Power Star. The perfect time to introduce our hero, Mario, who’s flung into the Mushroom Kingdom at just the right time to save it.

What’s most surprising about all of is the direction that Chris Pratt has taken in voicing Mario. Certainly nobody on the internet would have guessed that he and the directorial team would have chosen to simply rock up with a pretty standard Chris Pratt voice, with no hint of the iconic high-pitched Charles Martinet tone. OK, so we’re going off a very small sample size here, and there’s maybe the very slightest Brooklynite inflection, but it’s definitely still Chris Pratt.

More interesting is the rest of the cast. The trailer gives us a little bit of Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, while Jack Black is suitably loud and boomy as Bowser. We didn’t get to sample Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach, or Seth Rogen with be thumping his chest as Donkey Kong, but Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Charlie Day as Luigi does appear fleetingly at the end of the trailer (though just yelping as he flees)

Originally planned for a late 2022 release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will debut on 7th April in North America and 28th April in Japan.

Nintendo will be hoping the film follows in the footsteps of the hit Detective Pikachu movie that delighted fans of the Pokémon franchise when it released in 2019. It was a huge box office hit and showed Nintendo (via The Pokémon company) what modern animations and adaptations can achieve. However, Mario will now have to try and beat the records being set by his early 90’s rival, Sonic.
