Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 3 is out now for owners of the DLC season pass and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. That’s not all, though, because a free update alongside this adds a long-requested custom item picker for offline VS races and some online modes.
A new Custom Items feature is now available for all #MarioKart 8 Deluxe owners via a free update. Use it to choose which items appear in offline VS Races and certain online modes! pic.twitter.com/lfZLqaNDJE

This feature will let you disable select items from appearing in a race, meaning that you can ditch the Blue Shell… or only allow Blue Shells, if you’re a complete sociopath! For team races, item availability can be decided per team, adding plenty of flexibility.
Like the other waves, the eight tracks in Wave 3 will be split between two cups. Those are Rock Cup and Moon Cup.
Rock Cup will include:
- London Loop
- Boo Lake
- Rock Rock Mountain
- Maple Treeway
Moon Cup will include:
- Berlin Byways
- Peach Gardens
- Merry Mountain
- Rainbow Road
Again the source of these tracks differs, with two coming from Mario Kart Tour, one from the Gameboy Advance, one from Wii, two from 3DS, and one from the DS. Merry Mountain is the one new track that is very heavily inspired by Christmas and the holiday season.
We’ll add the patch notes here as soon as they appear.
For Wave 1, which released earlier this year, I said:
“As you play more, I’m sure it’s a tonal difference that will fade as you get used to it, but it does slightly undercut what Nintendo are selling and makes it feel like these were intended for another game – Mario Kart Tour, if this suspicion holds true. Then again, it’s hard to complain when there is such a huge wealth of circuits coming to the game through the Booster Pass’ six waves. It’s the gameplay that matters most, and the sheer variety of circuits that Nintendo are throwing into the mix is huge. They’re doubling the amount of tracks in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and it means that I and millions of others are sure to come back to the game and enjoy what it offers all over again.”
