PlayStation Plus January 2023 update live for Extra and Premium members

It’s PlayStation Plus update day, with a slew of games added to the service’s Extra and Premium tiers.

Last year Sony updated its subscription based service, now offering three tiers that include Essential at £6.99 a month, Extra at £10.99 a month, and Premium at £13.49 a month. But what’s the difference? Paying more will give you access to an ever-growing catalogue of games, similar to what Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass has to offer. At the top tier, you can enjoy game streaming via the cloud and the “Classics Catalogue” – games from previous Sony platforms, some of which have recent generous upgrades.

What are the other PS Plus Free Monthly Games in January?

Also included each month alongside the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalogue updates are the free games as part of PlayStation Plus Essential service. It’s a pretty good month, with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order headlining the selection. Here’s the full PS Plus Essential line up.

What actually is PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium?

The PlayStation Plus relaunch rolled out around the world in June 2022, transforming the PS Plus we once knew into a three tiered subscription service that bundles in and expands what was once PlayStation Now. The classic PS Plus is now called PS Plus Essential, giving access to online multiplayer gaming, cloud save backups, exclusive offers and at least 2 free monthly games. PS Plus Extra then adds a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games into the mix, while PS Plus Deluxe and Premium (depending on your region) adds older PS2, PS1 and PSP game emulation, and game streaming for PS3 and other titles.
