The February PS Plus monthly games have been confirmed

Mafia Definitive Edition

Sony has announced the PS Plus free monthly games for February 2023, and they’re continuing the year with a good selection of three games and an expansion for the evergreen Destiny 2. Step back to the 1930s with the crime family action of Mafia: Definitive Edition and more.

Heads up, the PlayStation Plus Collection is going away, so any PS Plus subscribing PS5 owners should download those before May!

What will the PS Plus February 2023 games be?

As was leaked earlier this week by the ever-reliable Billbil-kun, a member of French deals site Dealabs who’s recently taken to Twitter, the games are:

  • Evil Dead: The Game (PS4 | PS5)
  • OlliOlli World (PS4 | PS5)
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition (PS4)
  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (PS4 | PS5)

Mafia: Definitive Edition is probably the biggest of the bunch, a ground up remake of the well remembered 2002 open world crime family action. It follows taxi driver Tommy Angelo, who finds himself embroiled in the criminal activities of the Salieri family, with the remake both completely modernising the graphics and making some gameplay changes as well.

Then there’s Evil Dead, another take on the asymmetrical multiplayer genre. “Evil Dead fans will love the amount of fan service on offer here, from the painstaking recreation of movie locations to Bruce Campbell’s goofy one-liners,” we said in our 6/10 review. “However, when it comes to raw entertainment value, there’s an imbalance between the forces of good and evil. Playing as the survivors can be fun with friends but lacks the fun or variety of being an evildoer.”

If you’d rather a quirky skating game, then OlliOlli World is the answer, which we scored 8/10. “Behind the chilled out vibes of OlliOlli World’s new art style, happy-go-lucky characters and eccentric customisation, this game takes Roll7’s flow-state side-scrolling skating to new heights,” wrote Stefan. “It’s a tad more welcoming for newcomers, but even OlliOlli 2 veterans will have plenty of new tricks to learn and master through its increasingly wild and challenging levels.”

Finally there’s Destiny 2: Beyond Light. This expansion is now a couple years old, having launched in 2020 and its content cycle having run through to the early 2022 release of The Witch Queen. We’re on the cusp of Lightfall’s release as well, which will add a bunch of new abilities into the mix for eager Guardians to use. Still, this is a good way to introduce new players if they don’t want the limits of the basic free version.

Can I still download the January 2023 PlayStation Plus Games?

Absolutely! The PlayStation Plus games for January including the fantastic Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, giving you plenty of time to catch up on the game’s story before the sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases in April.

PlayStation Plus Collection is going away

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, the PlayStation Plus Collection of 19 great PS4 games is going away. Any PS5 owning PS Plus subscriber can grab the games until 9th May 2023, and if you do so in time, then you’ll continue to have access to them for as long as you’re a PS Plus subscriber. There’s some great games here, including The Last of Us Remastered, God of War, Until Dawn and Uncharted 4.

What’s the deal with PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium?

The PlayStation Plus relaunch took place back in the middle of 2022, transforming the PS Plus we once knew into a three tiered subscription service that bundles in and expands what was once PlayStation Now. The classic PS Plus is now called PS Plus Essential, giving access to online multiplayer gaming, cloud save backups, exclusive offers and at least 2 free monthly games. PS Plus Extra then adds a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games into the mix, while PS Plus Deluxe and Premium (depending on your region) adds older PS2, PS1 and PSP game emulation, and game streaming for PS3 and other titles.
