What We Played #590 – PSVR 2, Octopath Traveler 2 and Wild Hearts

Video games are a medium that can make you ponder the very concept of time, on occasion, and particularly when you’re ensconced in the all-encompassing digital environments that virtual reality provides. Yes, I’ve been almost exclusively playing PSVR 2 for the past week, bouncing back and forth between a bunch of different games and experiences, new and old.

Horizon Call of the Mountain is the big one, a fantastic showcase for the new hardware, and showing an innovative way of adapting the open world adventures of Guerrilla Games’ franchise into VR, stripping the concept back to a more engaging climbing and archer simulation… with fantastical sci-fi robots to battle. However, alongside that there’s been – deep breath – Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, Moss, After the Fall, Thumper, Tetris Effect, Rez, Cosmonious High, Puzzling Place, Kayak VR, The Last Clockwinder, Cities VR, Tentacular, What The Bat? and… probably some more games I’m barely able to remember!

It’s been a lot, and after yesterday’s initial reviews, you can expect to see a steady stream of follow ups, comparisons and other features over the next couple of weeks.

But enough about me. What about the rest of the team? Well, Dom, Jim and Jason have all been playing Wild Hearts – Or, “Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeearts” as Jason called it – and they’ve all thoroughly enjoyed this new riff on the Monster Hunter form.

Wild Hearts Ape Coop Fight

With his tamed heart, Nick P has been continuing on with Monster Hunter Rise, grinding his way up to HR100 before he takes a break, but mixing in Dead by Daylight, Fortnite, Overwatch 2 and “a metric ton” of Marvel Snap, where he’s now hit infinity rank. Meanwhile, Nic B has mainly been watching his other half play Hogwarts Legacy.

I roped Gamoc in to play some original PSVR games and capture footage, so he’s spent time in After the Fall, Moss and Thumper, but he’s also got going on our review of Atomic Heart, which is “weird”. Will it be weird in a good way, though? Find out next week!

Ade picked up Soundfall on Dom’s recommendation, and he and his partner have been loving it – “It’s a great genre hybrid, mixing a twin-stick shooter with rhythm action elements. It doesn’t sound like it should work but it absolutely does!” There’s also been some Little Witch Nobeta for an upcoming review.

Octopath Traveler 2 Combat

Reu’s review isn’t upcoming, though. He played Octopath Traveler 2, and found it to be “an enjoyable JRPG romp with all the typical trimmings that come with the genre.” He also repped team milk chocolate in last weekend’s Splatfest and started Persona 3 Portable.

And finally, Steve claims to have played a simply stupid 170 demos from the Steam Next Fest, and still found time for a full game in the form of Souls-y Metroidvania Elderand, and a mystery game that he’s sure to be able to talk about soon.

Now then, what have your gaming escapades entailed this past week?
