Pulpy turn-based tactics game The Lamplighters League announced by Shadowrun developers

Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes have announced a new turn-based tactics game The Lamplighters League and the Tower at the End of the World, coming to PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2023 – not PS5, sorry. It will also be coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Set in a pulpy alternate reality 1930s, this adventure will see you trying to outrun and outwit a global cult called the Banished Court that is hell bent on world domination. Where you might expect to throw heroic characters into the fray, The Lamplighters League that was once made up of scholarly heroes has been drained of its best, and instead draws upon criminals and misfits to do the dirty work.

That dirty work will include turn-based tactical combat, but for the first time in a Harebrained Schemes game, there will be a real-time infiltration phase that precedes this. That pre-combat phase will allow you to get the lay of the land, sneak past enemies and even take out some isolated enemies before it all kicks off.

Here’s Harebrained themselves to describe what the game’s all about.

This will be Harebrained Schemes’ first brand new IP, the studio having built up its reputation in adapting the Shadowrun and Battletech universes into video games.

The Lamplighters League gameplay

Christopher Rogers, Game Director of The Lamplighters League said, “For years, we’ve been privileged to tell stories in cherished settings like Shadowrun and BATTLETECH. Because The Lamplighters League is set in a new world, it allows us the creative freedom to simultaneously create narrative that supports gameplay and gameplay that supports narrative. We love these characters and hope that players and fans enjoy getting to know them while exploring each one’s unique abilities the way we did. I cannot wait to share everything we’ve been working on.”

It sure makes a change of pace compared to the stompy tactics of Battletech, set in a far-flung future with giant battle mech suits butting heads.
