Capping off the first State of Play of 2024, which included the reveal of Death Stranding 2’s full title, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst and Hideo Kojima united to announce an exciting new project for after Death Stranding 2’s release in 2025. Hideo Kojima is going to make a new action espionage game IP!
That’s right, Hideo Kojima will be returning to the stomping grounds of the Metal Gear Solid franchise that he led during his tenure at Konami. Of course, that relationship ended in acrimony with Kojima being given the boot after the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
From there he founded his own Kojima Productions and partnered with Sony to make Death Stranding.
But apparently Hulst has been pushing him to return to the Metal Gear Solid-like, and he’s actually going to do it. He said:
“Yes, it will be a brand new, original IP, a next-generation action espionage game. Preparations are underway, but production will begin in earnest at Kojima Productions after Death Stranding 2. We have extensive experience with Sony, having grown the espionage genre together for almost 30 years. Also, Sony not only does games, but also music and movies. It will definitely be a strong collaboration.Â
“Two years from now, I will celebrate the 40th anniversary of my game production career. I am confident that this title will be the culmination of my work.”
Prompted if he could share anything more, he continued:
“I cannot tell you so much now… but we plan to bring together cutting-edge technology and talent from around the world to create it. Of course, it is an interactive game, but it is also a movie at the same time in terms of look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion and sound.
“With this title, we hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games.”
Classic Kojima with his 7 hours of cutscenes, eh? But, maybe not. There’s a whopping great big hint that this could be much more than just a video game, with the camera then pulling out to reveal that the pair were on a busy soundstage at Columbia Pictures. Is he getting to make an actual movie?
