Owlcat Games’ ambitious looking sci-fi action RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is set to launch in spring 2027, the studio has announced, coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and set to be a day one launch into Xbox Game Pass.

But, and this is quite a big but, you could play it much sooner than that with a closed beta set to take place next month from 22nd April for those who pre-order the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition.

The beta will include a full mission from the start of the game, set on the Pinkwater 4 station. Here you’ll meet some of its residents, including Zafar who will join your crew, and it will build up to fighting a major enemy and becoming a ship captain. It will be available to play across PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 – wherever it is that you pre-order – but Owlcat naturally explains that performance will be variable at this time and it’s still very much a work in progress.

Best known for their CRPGs Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Owlcat is shifting gears for their adaptation of The Expanse. The above gameplay trailer shows a lot of snippets of action, much of which has that Mass Effect feel for the dialogue, for the third person combat, and more.

Cast as a Pinkwater Security mercenary, you get wrapped up in the events that ripple through the solar system with the start of the story in the books and TV series, running in parallel to the adventures of the crew of the Rocinante . You can choose to be from Earth and Mars, or be a Belter. You will need to use different skills in combat and outside of it. In combat, the action will be that of a third person shooter but with tactical elements as you will need to use tactical items and the skills of your crew to get the upper hand. The crew will be incredibly important to the story and the way events can unfold. Each person you pick up has their own goals, motivations, and history to unpick, which you may discover while living together on the ship, which is called Gemini. Uncovering the layers of your crew and the secrets of the wider Expanse universe, and by doing so the paths that open to you can and will change.
