Square Enix had one final announcement during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, revealing that they are bringing the huge MMORPG to Nintendo Switch 2.
This Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy XIV will launch in August, but this will be preceded by an early access period to test server stability.
This port comes with an…. “interesting” twist on the subscription business model. A separate Switch 2 subscription is required to play FF14 on Nintendo’s platform, while PC, PS5 and Xbox are able to share a subscription, however there are two concessions to this. For one, you won’t need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play FF14, and if you do hold an existing subscription for other platforms, the Switch 2 subscription will be 50% off.
That’s a real stinger for people that already play on other platforms and would like to dabble in portable play, but if you’re playing exclusively on Switch 2, then not needing Switch Online is nice.
All of this was at the end of a jam-packed opening showcase, which brought news of the next massive expansion, Evercold, which is launching in January 2027. Head here to find out more.
