Supermassive Games is laying off up to 75 employees

British developer Supermassive Games has announced that they are laying off up to 75 employees, the announcement coming a few months after the release of Directive 8020.

Posting on social media, the studio writes:

“We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company.

“We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and our priority throughout the process will be to provide support to all those impacted.”

The studio has been a notable part of the Guildford game development scene since its founding 2008, with its first big hit being the horror game Until Dawn in 2015. However, they’ve had their ups and downs since then, as the work with Sony for PSVR didn’t really land. 2019 saw them return to the well of narrative horror with The Dark Pictures Anthology series, gaining more backing to produce The Quarry for 2K in 2022 – the same year they were acquired outright by Nordisk Games – The Casting of Frank Stone for Behavior Interactive in 2024 and Little Nightmares III for Bandai Namco in 2025. Directive 8020 was then self published earlier this year. Future games and projects have not yet been announced.

This isn’t the first time that Supermassive has undergone layoffs, with 90 jobs cut in 2024. The studio had around 350 employees in 2023, so it will have roughly halved in size.

It’s still a rough time for the games industry, and we hope that those affected are able to find new work soon.
