Capcom has announced new DLC for Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. Up until now, the DLC has just been for things you can actually unlock by playing through the game normally. That will soon change.
The first set of DLC, Color Pack 1, is the least interesting of the bunch. That will become available next week for $2.99 and adds seven new colors for each character in the game. Unfortunately, the new colors won’t show up during replays and your opponent won’t see them unless they also have the DLC.
The next set of DLC is expected to launch sometime next month and consists of new music. The music packs will contain all the character themes from Street Fighter III: New Generation and SFIII: Second Impact. Capcom has not announced how much these packs will cost yet.
The last bit of DLC is far more intriguing. Apparently, before the release of Third Strike Online, Capcom held a secret tournament featuring 16 high level players from around the world. Match packs of these secret battles will be released as DLC in the future, complete with professional commentary from the amazing James Chen.
The first pack will contain the Top 8 bracket from the tournament and the second pack will feature the “best bouts” from the event. Capcom promises that both packs will have over an hour worth of content.
The idea of releasing tournament matches as DLC is interesting to say the least. Millions of gamers around the world already watch live streams of various fighting game events. Having these matches provided by the game itself seems like a natural evolution. Could this be a sign of things to come for the fighting game genre? We’ll just have to wait and see.

This is a bit of a crock in my opinion, wasn’t the idea to get some DLC free when you preorder the game as part of PLAY? Instead you just get an unlock for a character already in the game, and they save the real DLC to charge you later.

Preordering the game gave you some themes and gave you an unlock code to play as the final boss Gill, who is normally unlockable by completing the game with every character. If you have PS+ you get it for a lower price.
“When Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition is purchased through PLAY, purchasers will be able to unlock GILL, the self-proclaimed god, without having to beat the game with every character, as day-one DLC.” – PlayStation Blog.
If you bought the game through PLAY, have PS+, and purchased the DLC colors it would add up to what the game normally costs. That’s assuming you even want colors in the first place. The music is far more enticing from my point of view.
I just want to point out that Third Strike has more than enough content without this purely optional, non-gameplay influencing DLC. This game seriously has more features than most modern fighting games out there. Capcom could have released a poorly developed port with no additional content and a broken online mode, much like the Mortal Kombat Kollection. Instead, they added new stuff that goes beyond the scope of the original title.
The DLC they announced is also stuff not in Third Strike, so it’s not like it was pulled out and repackaged as DLC.

Extra COLOURS,. extra music. Typical Capcom, seriously a second colour back in Street Fighter II was worth it but 10 gazillion colours per fighter is just a waste of money and dlc window on the store. What’s next new costumes for the sprites in the background?
Seriously give us DLC that’s worth it

The music from the first two SF3 games is actually neat since Third Strike has its own distinctive soundtrack. I’m hoping they release the stages from those games too since those were much better than the ones they made for 3rd Strike.
Extra colors and costumes is a staple for fighting games believe it or not. BlazBlue has alternate color packs, street fighter has new costumes, mortal kombat has new oldschool costumes, etc. One of those things that don’t really matter but some people like it.

they’re selling palette swap options?
they’re actually selling a palette swap?
and it sounds like they’ll be selling more colours later.
dlc has reached a new low.
and i thought ea selling cheats was as bad as it could get.

You should see BlazBlue. Arc System Works did the same thing. A year ago.

ok that’s lame too.
i guess capcom aren’t alone in their rapacity.
though they do seem to have turned it into an artform.
it’s about the only thing they do anymore that could be considered art.
