To be honest I was expecting a flood of support for Far Cry 3. I’ve rarely heard a bad word said about it on social media, and while the response to last week’s WeView was hardly negative, it wasn’t exactly overwhelmingly positive either.
[drop]That’s not to say that weren’t those who enjoyed the game. SpikeyMikey23 called Far Cry 3 his “favourite game of the PS3 era bar Call of Duty 4,” and noted that it was the only game he’s actually bothered to platinum. Origami Killer heavily backed the game as well, echoing SpikeyMikey23 in calling it his “personal GOTY of 2012, maybe even of the PS3.” He praised the game’s open world for being “vast, vibrant and just bundling with things to see and do,” and called Vaas “one of the best [characters] I’ve seen in a game.”In fact Vaas had a number of fans, with The Lone Steven calling him “a very likeable villian and… the best villain of 2012,” while yiddo simply said that he “love[s] this guy”. However, SpikeyMikey23 felt he “wasn’t in it enough to be called one of the greatest villains” and DirtyHabbit felt the game would have been better served if they’d “peaked with Vaas at the end” rather than Hoyt.
Megamoppy went even further, saying:
Vaas was a fairly big let down, I thought his role in the story was fairly inconsequential and not very fleshed out. They give him some pseudo philosophical crap about insanity and think it makes him deep.
The game’s general story was just as divisive as Vaas, with Tuffcub complaining that the game featured an “awful story which ruined it for me,” while LTG Davey simply called it dull. On the other hand Origami Killer said that the story “was wonderful,” and felt “there was always a sense of fantasy for Jason.”
Sitting in between the two sides was nightdc, who pointed out that the game has a “story if you want to play it if not then you can just do what you want when you want how you want.” That largely optional element of the story is one of the key points of a good open world game for me, you should just be able to do your own thing if you feel like it.
The graphics were more positively received though, with gazzagb saying “it looks absolutely gorgeous on PC,” something that topgear agreed with. He’d also been playing it on PC, and found that “on ultra settings… the visuals are amazing!”
Despite the complaints about the game’s story, and the under use of Vaas, Far Cry 3 did just just tip the scales in its favour. Although Bargain Bin It and Avoid It picked up just one vote each, Rent It had a strong showing, coming in with five votes. However, Buy It just managed to edge it, grabbing eight votes.
Now, onto this week’s poll. The Walking Dead absolutely dominated last week’s poll, and will be showing up in tomorrow’s WeView. Unfortunately Torchlight II didn’t do quite so well, so we say goodbye to it for now. Need for Speed: Most Wanted enters to vie for pole position, while Prototype 2 returns to the poll after a strong loser’s showing in the past. Remember, you’ve got until Sunday to cast your votes.

I was disappointed too at Vaas’s role in the grand scheme of things, he ended up being some kind of halfway point boss While I wasn’t disappointed with Hoyt, it did feel like the media around the game made out Vaas to be far more important than he could’ve been.

Bugger, forgot to vote. Would have gone Buy it so won’t have changed much anyway.

absolute Buy it. one of the games that brought me back to gaming. the others would be SSX and dishonored. before that i didn’t play a lot for a few years. this and the other 2 games i liked so much and played to the death. this was absolutely amazing to play although i did think it was a bit short and the side mission could become repoetetive. but other than that amazing

It’s sooooo much better than Far Cry 2. Definitely worth buying, imo.

It’s a Far Cry from Far Cry 2.
The Lone Steven
Far Cry 2 could have been decent if it weren’t for those respawning outposts and AI that always knew where you would be, thus ruining the journey if you had planned on seeing the scenery via jeep. That and the weapons had a tendecy to break too quickly, for a game that is set in modern day. Not even, Fallout 3 and NV had weapons that degraded to the point of being useless in that amount of time. :O

Never played it, what with all the back log to get through. I assume I’ll pick it up in a few months half cheap.
Thanks for the WeView!

Yay a mention! I’d just like to reiterate that I really did like Farcry 3, the island and combat are fantastic, just the story sucked. I just tend to focus on the negatives even when i’ve really enjoyed a game.
Origami Killer
Cheers for the double mention. I should go back and finish off the last coop missions for the plat.
