The Times technology reporter, Murad Ahmed, has quietly dropped a bit of a scoop. His latest entry on The Times’ paywalled website starts by claiming that Sony is considering a price for the next PlayStation that would be something of a pleasant surprise.
The figure quoted is £300. That’s over £100 cheaper than the price of a launch day PlayStation 3 and would probably equate to something like $400 in the US.
Obviously, we’re all hoping for something as awesome as possible for as cheap as possible when Sony announces the future of PlayStation this week. Personally, I had been hoping for something like £250-£300 but expecting something more like £400-£500 for what is sure to be a very powerful machine. Of course, the other option is that Sony is planning a couple of bundles, including a limited one, perhaps with a small hard disk and a DualShock 3 rather than their fancy new controller.
I’d be surprised to hear anything about price on Wednesday so perhaps we can expect this area to be the next big rumour roundabout, once the actual console is unveiled.

Personally, my guess (and possibly hope) was a £300 price at launch and 399$

£300 is a fair chunk. But depending on the 20th and taking the controller into consideration. I think I can justify it. I do think it’ll be a little more, or at least, I’m desperately trying not to get too excited.
I think I’d rather pay more, £350 – £400 ish tops, and get a nice DS4 and a bigger HDD though. Don’t want to be clawing for space and forking out more later. I’ve got three DS3s anyway.

Sony to adopt the Free to play model for PS4. Console is free but you have to pay for the processor, memory, etc.

I’m half expecting some form of subsidised deal from someone for the next gen consoles. £100 plus a 2 year contract for online services (Gaikai and Plus or Live Gold on Nextbox) seems like something that would fit with how the industry is leaning.

Look into warranties. Last PS3 I brought (after cancelling continuous play on my fatty) was only £40 for a 3 year warranty. That was from Game, and I made sure it was an insurance back warranty
