The Times Has Good News About The PS4 Price

The Times technology reporter, Murad Ahmed, has quietly dropped a bit of a scoop. His latest entry on The Times’ paywalled website starts by claiming that Sony is considering a price for the next PlayStation that would be something of a pleasant surprise.

The figure quoted is £300. That’s over £100 cheaper than the price of a launch day PlayStation 3 and would probably equate to something like $400 in the US.

Obviously, we’re all hoping for something as awesome as possible for as cheap as possible when Sony announces the future of PlayStation this week. Personally, I had been hoping for something like £250-£300 but expecting something more like £400-£500 for what is sure to be a very powerful machine. Of course, the other option is that Sony is planning a couple of bundles, including a limited one, perhaps with a small hard disk and a DualShock 3 rather than their fancy new controller.

I’d be surprised to hear anything about price on Wednesday so perhaps we can expect this area to be the next big rumour roundabout, once the actual console is unveiled.

How about you, obviously we’d all like to spend as little as possible but do you have any personal upper limits to what you’re willing to spend? Do you think this kind of price is fair or are you sure that it’ll be more expensive? Sound off in the comments section below!

  1. I suspect it will be in the £300 to £350 price range as they can’t risk charging more then that due to the PS3 suffering from it’s £400 price point. Most people are willing to pay up to £350 for it provided, there is a decent selection of games available at launch.

Personally, i’m going to wait a few years to see how well it does as Sony has nearly done naff all for the Vita and i would hate to pick up a £350 console only for it to become an expensive decoration that sometimes plays DVDs and games.

  2. £1000 with The Last Guardian bundled in.

    • If they do that, it would end up failing quicker then the Virtual boy did. :O As no-one wants to pay that much for it, barring the hardcore fanboys that will buy anything that is related to Sony.

  3. I’d not mind paying £400 – £500 as it means a more advanced kit.

  4. I’m happy up to £500. Especially with a staff discount.

  5. £300? All things considered that wouldn’t be too bad I guess. Think I’m going to wait 12 months or so for the second wave of games to hit (and its sure to have a better price tag by that point)

Then again in the highly unlikely event GT6 is a launch title then I’ll be sold…

  6. If that price is right and Sony don’t ship it at a loss then it’s going to be a fair bit behind the curve compared to the PC. Depends what “value added” toys it’s going to come with I guess. Can’t wait for the announcement, but I expect to be underwhelmed.

  7. My guess is still a 400€ launch price point and I’d be willing to pay that much. I’d prefer it if a game was bundled but I’d still get one if it was just the console and one controller.
I’ve read some potentially leaked specs on NeoGAF earlier today and they mentioned a single 500 GB SKU with 4 GB RAM

  8. glad money is easy come easy go for me, I’d pay £800 on launch day easily, money’s only money at the end of the day, meh.

  9. I would pay £400 for one.

  10. £300 is excellent, I expected $399 but thought we’d get screwed in the conversion and end up paying £349.99.

£300 is the upper limit id be “happy” paying, but I’d still pay more, albeit a bit begrudgingly.

    • Ha that is basically what I’m like. I’ve said £300 is pretty much my maximum, maybe stretch to £350 but I know for a fct if it was £600 I’d find the cash and fork it out.

I’m just a playstation whore really.
