Tretton Discusses PS4’s “Three Key Advantages” In The Next Generation

The ever-happy SCEA CEO Jack Tretton discussed in an interview with Fox how Sony’s PS4 has some big advantages over Microsoft’s Xbox One as we’re about to enter the next generation of games consoles.

Power, price and games are the three buzzwords, with Tretton saying “we’ve got the most powerful machine on the market; $100 cheaper than our competition, and most importantly, the biggest, most diverse exclusive line-up of any platform ever launched”.

He’s very enthusiastic for the company, describing them as “at an all-time high right now” – better than the PS2 era, even? He says this is due to focusing his lasers on consumers. No, wait, it’s the fact they’ve stayed “laser-focused on the consumer” while giving developers a “palette to create the best gaming experience possible.”

Tretton went on to describe how Sony’s “competitors come and go,” before saying that they’ve faced “formidable competition in the past,” and will face “formidable competition going forward”.

All of this will “reinvigorate the industry” and be “the biggest launch in history”. It’s nice to see a man so happy and confident – as Tretton perpetually is – describing the new machine as the “crown jewel” of PlayStation.

The PS4 releases on November 15th in the US, but he adds that they are focused on the next 10 years, the release date is just “day one”. It’ll be available in Europe two weeks later, on November 29th.

  1. He’s a good rep for Sony. In fact all of them have been with Cerny, House & Yoshida genuinely excited about the PS4.

    • Contrast to Mattrick, Spencer, MajorNelson, and now Penello.

      • Major Nelson at least is usually alright but he’s been a bit of a tool at times about the Xbox One. Makes you wonder if they applied a 180 to his personality too.

      • Agreed, most of the Sony guys seem to have a real passion for what they do, while Spencer + Major Nelson especially just appear to be arrogant all the time.

      • The difference is passion and interest. With Sony it feels like they really have a passion and interest in the gaming industry/games/customers etc. With Microsoft it always feels like they are saying stuff just to cover their arses or make a noise because Sony are.

  2. Can’t argue with him there.

    • I’m sure “someone” will disagree.

  3. It’s hard to understate how priceless a truly likeable front-man is, and Sony currently have at least 2.

Sony are doing really well at the moment, I just hope for our sake as customers that they can keep it up, and currently the signs seem to suggest that they’ll do exactly that.

  4. Sony’s reps are indeed doing quite a good job at the moment. For me, they come across so much less arrogant than what I hear from MS or Nintendo, but of course, I’m biased there.
Really enjoyed his E3 moments this year, demonstrating how stupid MS’s strategy at the time was. :o)

  5. Total polar opposites to Microsoft. Actually likeable people. Though Microsoft has given us quite a few laughs this year, but not for good reasons.

  6. Three simple truths, gotta love his style. :)

  7. This is the difference in companys. Sony, experienced, friendly, happy and customer focused. While Microsoft seem like a young, unexperienced, unhappy and not customer focused, kind of like a bully with their money.

If you don’t like what Sony have to offer, but personally I think they are mad, seeing and knowing what my experience has been like since day one of the PS1.

  8. I think an important part of Son¥’s strategy has been their ongoing support of PS3. M$ in comparison have appeared to given up on the 360 after 5 or so years. What’s to say the same won’t happen with the Xbone? In fact the PS3 has generally (in my opinion) improved through it’s life while the 360 went from being a clear generation winning machine to bottom of the pile by the end.
Of course this could just be role reversals too – where M$ have to over impress to keep up.
I guess, either way we all win :-)

    • have to disagree with this, they PS3 has improved a hell a lot, but not nearly like the 360 has, this partly due to the PS3 having a lot more at its launch though. I go on the 360 a lot more than the PlayStation these days, because its a much faster unit (arcade Xbox, 80gb phat Ps3) I go to an app now and I never see it buffering or drop quality, its now a lovely machine.

On a side note, when you look purely at games, PS3 still trumps Xbox.
