Bad news if you were waiting it out, hoping to get your “lost” Grand Theft Auto Online character back before jumping back into the multiplayer again: Rockstar can’t do anything about these characters, as they’ve essentially been overwritten.
They did add a warning to the load screens in GTA itself, saying to back out and try again rather than create a new character in that slot, though this came a little too late, as people still lost their characters.
For those asking about their lost characters or rank, those will not be able to be restored so we sincerely hope that this cash stimulus we’re giving out this month will help you get back on your feet or to make your new life in Los Santos & Blaine extra sweet.
The cash stimulus they’re referring to is the 500K in GTA cash that they’re offering to players affected by the initial GTA Online issues. While this won’t replace your rank, and may skew the game somewhat, it’s a nice enough gesture.
Did you lose a character on GTA Online? Were they a high rank? If so, do you think the money is enough to replace the time spent? Personally, I had to recreate my character at least five times.

The first character I made didn’t make it past the character-creator menu. The second skipped the introduction sequence and spawned two meters up in the air by the Vinewood sign right after creation, fell down and could do no missions until I restarted the game. I then got the intro.
No wonder they held back Online till October, should have held off another month or two by the looks of things.

Wow, so when they told us to wait and we did whilst all our crew buddies ranked up got promoted etc etc, they come back to us 10 days later to tell you that the character you played with for 10 hours or so is A) lost and B) you wasted 10 hours. THANKS R*! The apology is begrudgingly accepted, but what screws this up the most is the way they say sorry is to give everyone $500K and effectively breaking the whole point of Multiplayer. Remember from the advert guys “MONEY IS KING” except now it’s not. Sorry for the rant guys it’s just I stopped playing 10 days ago to try and get my character back and now this.

I think I’m on my 5th proper character with 10 probably overall. Lost quite a few level 5-8 characters due to my impatience. Seems to be fine now.

I lost my character 3x lost at Rank 7, 10 and 4. But now for the 4th attempt and completing the tutorials it seems fine considering I am Rank 71
