While the PS4 will release with a mono headset in the box which attaches to the DualShock 4’s audio jack, it won’t support current bluetooth headsets at launch – be that official Sony  other wise.
1HP have learned, through a PlayStation representative, that the patch is aiming for release before the end of the year, but you shouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being next year.
Hopefully the wait isn’t too long, as even Sony’s PULSE headset won’t work at all until the update is launched. It’s a similar tale for Microsoft, as their required third party headset adapter has slipped into 2014 too.

Just reading on the US blog, there will be a 300mb patch to download on day one. Not the most ideal experience when booting up your console on launch day.
It’s obviously better than delaying the launch by having to stop production. But stil…

It does seem a bit of a rushed job. I’m can’t wait to get my PS4 on launch day (fingers crossed), but all of these patches and delayed releases make me wonder if a launch this early will be worth it. I hope so though!

*I can’t wait (sorry for replying to the reply but that was gonna bug me forever)

Its not a rushed job. Its a phased job. This is phase one where they sell a chunk of the first party mono headsets they’ve been churning out. Then they release said patch and in steps third party sales.

Hadn’t thought about that way if I’m honest. Still have the various other delays though, although I guess that’s bound to happen in a generation jump.

Presumably you can download the update in the background while playing.
I do think it’s a shame that those people who are banking on using their old headsets won’t be able to do so from day one on either XB1 or PS4.
Bilbo_bobbins
You can hear audio through Sony headset on launch day, but chat wont work until the patch.
pretty poor IMO.

How hard can it possibly be? It’s been a standard and basic feature on every bluetooth enabled device the last decade.
DarkLord
Have you programmed Bluetooth stacks on FreeBSD? Otherwise how could you possibly know hoe hard it can be?
All I know, is when my launch PS3 arrived, firmware updates were a pretty much monthly affair, and they all contained HUGE improvements. Expect the same this time around. This time however, it sounds like background downloading and possibly even patching are the name of the game.

But the ones with usb will, I believe?
Kennykazey
Pulse uses USB, and that’s not supported so who knows. Could be a model by model situation.
RudeAwakening
I don’t get why this was not implemented into the PS4 from the get go. Crazy, weird and a bloody pain as my €100 Turtle’s are now void!

I dont mind watching a 300mb download. Will only take about 10 minutes to download. I’ll enjoy a nice coffee whilst it downloads. At least they have a boxed headset, rather than there being no patch until next year and then making you buy their official and only working headset.
TheDeathAvenger
Well I’ve got a PX5 headset, audio via optical should be fine. The bluetooth mic won’t work, though headset has a 2.5mm (I think) port for Xbox, so I assume I could just get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable and connect the headset to the DS4, worth a try at least.
WalkingP
I know that a rep from TB announced that the PX5 will work on day one, but on the TB website there’s a note on the headset saying that the headset is yet to be tested on a PS4. So, who knows? I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve also got a Sony Pulse headset that I know won’t work until they get the patch released.

As Sony are bundling a headset (be it a mono one) with the PS4, I’m not too fussed about waiting a while to use my bluetooth one.
