Sony “Exploring Possibilities” For MP3 Playback And DLNA Support

After the ultimate PS4 FAQ went live over on the PlayStation Blog, there was a bit of an uproar after people noticed that the console would not support MP3 files or DLNA, so you essentially couldn’t play music or stream content from another device.

Due to the fact that the PS3 features all of these, and a huge number of people buy it to use as a media system, this obviously seemed like a strange choice – why wouldn’t these be supported?

They’ve since updated the FAQ with a line below the MP3 and DLNA/streaming sections saying that they “appreciate your feedback and are exploring possibilities”, so all the complaining has definitely changed something, at least.

What’s more is that Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida has thanked fans for the feedback, and that he’ll share with the PS4 development team for “future consideration”.

After that, he’s had a “very good” discussion with that dev team, and they’re really happy to learn that people use the PS4’s media features so much. So, they obviously just misjudged how much people wanted a media device.

So, it seems as though this functionality may come with a future patch, if that’s at all possible – which is probably is – and we could see PS4 media functionality down the line.

Until then we can assume your PS3 won’t be going anywhere.

  1. Haha, I love the way they word things.

    Translation:
“Okay okay, stop screaming about MP3 and DLNA! Jesus, I’ll tell them, ok?!”

“I get it, we thought we could get away with it but you got SUPER pissed about this. I guess we’ll probably have to backtrack”

  2. Let’s hope these features come along. I have a valid reason not to buy at lunch now though.

    • Launch even. I missed lunch today:(

      • Haha im buying mine at breakfast. They’ll be sold out by lunch.

      • I’ll be doing the midnight snack thing.

  3. Sony may have made a mistake in not including these things but its the way they deal with this that is going to be so important.

  4. This is what has impressed me so much with Sony, and also ms regarding next gen, they’re happy to listen to customer feedback and change their plans based on that.
Sony really need to take this on board, people are so used to their ps3 doing everything. A lot of ps4 buyers won’t read this sort of thing, will just buy it assuming these standard features are included and be mighty pissed off when they realise they’re not.

    • Totally agree with you and for all of the MS rubbish-they have at least valued customer feedback. It took Sony mind less than a day to get the ball rolling.

  5. I imagine Sony just misjudged their popularity and thought they could save money by not licensing either of them.

At least they appear to be listen and should only be software/firmware related not hardware.

Could have just said deal with it but who would be stupid enough to do that?

  6. Excellent, nice to see Sony – once again – listening to the public. I’m fine this not being on board at the start of the PS4’s life buit it really needs to be patched in by the the time the PS3s start get relegated to the cupboard.

    • My view exactly. I’m not expecting my ps3 to go anywhere any time soon.

    • exactly this, fine they might have fucked up not including it, but at least they are listening and talking about it. That is a massive step forward in customer service from Sony and it pleases many customers.

Like you said, it has to be patched in at some point, otherwise Sony consoles are going backwards in technology and not what they wanted for their Home console.

  7. I think this is just a case of the new machine doing a lot of new things and some old things that were deemed non-critical were just deprioritised for launch. I fully expect to see MP3 and DLNA support patched in down the line.

  8. Much like microsofts abandoned policies, they really should have seen the reaction coming. And audio cds still out by the sounds of it.

    • I think the Audio CD thing may well be impossible due to hardware, the other two though would “simply” be firmware updates.

  9. Well alrighty then, hopefully more news on it soon.

  10. Wow, first I’ve heard about no DLNA on PS4 at launch. I, probably like the majority of eager buyers, just presumed it would be a given.

    • Same here. Now I’m getting worried it won’t support the BBC iPlayer & 4OD apps etc.

    • Looks like I’ll need to keep my PS3 stationed next to the big telly for a while longer. I was hoping to shift it upstairs in to my home office so that a quick lunchtime game would be easier.

      • I’ve decided I’m gonna leave my PS3 connected to the TV for music and movies and buy a 27″ LED Monitor for gaming on the PS4 and get fully immersed by sitting about a foot away. Now I just need to research a decent 7.1 sound bar.
