Sony Overtake Nintendo In Console Sales, Now Lead The Pack

Just in time for some official E3 bragging rights, it has emerged this morning that Sony are the global number one in console manufacturing.  According to Nikkei reports, the combined sales of Playstation hardware reached an impressive 18.7 million units for the year ending March 2014.

The release of the PS4 clearly had a big impact, contributing nearly 7 million consoles to the tally, though the report notes that Sony’s overall hardware sales, including those for the PS Vita, had fallen 20% year on year.

Nintendo have led the manufacturing race for the past seven years thanks to the combined strength of the Wii and DS, and whilst the 16.31 million consoles they’ve sold in the past year are far from a failure they see a fall of 31% for the Japanese company, thanks in part to the struggling Wii U.

In contrast Microsoft’s sales rose by 16% to a total of 11.6 million, buoyed by the release of the Xbox One.

  1. I expect it will stay that way as well. Can’t see Nintendo turning things round. Expect Microsoft will overtake them in a year or too as well.

  2. Well deserved. Best there is in the game at the moment.

  3. I’ll be getting a Wiiu sometime soon. I’ve just made the ultimate mistake! I know have a few wiii games on my shelf waiting to be played…..

  4. Good news for Sony, not so good for Microsoft, although they don’t have a handheld console so it’s not as bad as it looks.
