BBC’s GTA Drama Is Named Game Changer, Daniel Radcliffe And Bill Paxton Confirmed

BBC Two have announced their commissions for this year and with that we’ve finally got a bit more confirmed information on their Grand Theft Auto drama, which is now named Game Changer – though that’s still a working title.

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton will indeed star, as Rockstar’s Sam Houser and Jack Thompson respectively. Thompson was a campaigning lawyer who used his power in attempt to stop violence in video games, going after the creators of the legendary game series.

It’s for an adult audience, naturally, and will have a 90 minute runtime. Here’s a bit of the BBC’s blurb:

Grand Theft Auto offers gamers the chance to step into a fantasy world where they can behave like criminals, gun down rival gangsters and cops, hijack cars and venture deeper into an imaginary American underworld.

But the violent gameplay coupled with its outstanding commercial success leads to fierce opposition: from parents worried about children immersing themselves in such a violent world; from politicians, alarmed at the values they say it encourages; and above all from moral campaigners, who fight passionately to ban it. At the vanguard of this crusade is the formidable campaigning lawyer Jack Thompson, a man determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of Grand Theft Auto.

Game Changer (w/t) tells the story of an extraordinary chapter in the history of this iconic game, and reveals the major impact it has had on our cultural landscape.

As previously rumoured, Owen Harris is to direct and Jamie Wood has written the feature. Hopefully it’ll portray the story well, though we’ll just have to wait and see if this will be a true game changer for the medium.

  1. That is such a generic title. Hopefully, they’ll change the title to something more interesting and it will be an excellent drama. I do hope the BBC have done their research and will have Rockstar’s origins. Also, no-one tell that school that this is being made otherwise, the police may have to arrest every parent with a TV.

  2. I honestly can’t see this appealing to the average gamer with feet firmly placed on terra firma….not with it having real people involved as a pose to digital animations.
It’ll be as believable and unentertaining as that prick Danny Dyer being an Eastend hardman!

  3. Unless this portrays Thompson to be the utter bellend that he actually is, I’ll… I dunno, Paxton can do any role well but this is BBC so I don’t expect anything remotely close to reality.

Seriously, I’m just chiming in here to let people know Jack Thompson is a bigger knob than this show will represent. He’s worse than Uwe Boll, and that’s something.
